Voted Houston’s Best Charter School Two Years in a Row

Dear Aristoi Classical Academy Cypress Families,

 

Aristoi Cypress was excited to announce our four houses on Thursday, September 24 and induct students in the houses. We wanted to provide you with some information about the houses, house competitions planned for this academic year, and the philosophy behind a house system.  

 

The House System is a long standing tradition that dates back to the Middle Ages. It is used as a way to form community, camaraderie, and character. What was first prominent in British colleges and universities later expanded into British schools. Houses are now widely used in American private and public schools providing students with opportunities to lead, to support one another, and to be recognized for both individual and collective excellence. Moreover, houses provide students across grade levels to interact in meaningful and exciting ways.  

 

Aristoi Katy has had the House System for several years, and Aristoi Cypress has spent the last year planning and preparing. A committee of faculty helped name the houses and choose the colors, symbols, virtues, and Latin house mottos. The four houses, Homer, Shakespeare, Austen, Tolkien, were chosen from famous authors of the Great Conversation in each time period of classical education.

 

 

Our vision for the house system at Aristoi Cypress is manifold. We seek to foster a stronger community, engage our scholars with authors in the Great Tradition, offer opportunities for leadership, service, and leisure, and create a lasting legacy on our classical community. To aid in these goals, we will hold various monthly house competitions, events, and house feasts throughout the academic year. The house competitions will endeavor to showcase athleticism, artistic abilities, academic strength, and engineering skills. These events will be balanced, so there is something for everyone. 

 

At this time, the plan is for the house system to include seventh grade and up, but there are discussions about inviting the younger grades to participate. Family members are all inducted into the same house, and house placements are permanent for a scholar’s academic career at Aristoi Cypress.  

 

Just as many have a favorite sports team they cheer for, we look forward to cheering for houses within our school in a similar manner. We have seen the excitement in our staff and scholars, and we look forward to this next step in the history of Aristoi Cypress.
