ANELL ALEXANDER, Art Teacher                                       August 18, 2011
Aristoi Classical Academy
West Houston Charter School

WELCOME TO THE 2011-2012 SCHOOL YEAR AT ARISTOI CLASSICAL ACADEMY.

By way of a quick introduction, This is my third year at our school.  It has truly been a blessing to work with younger children, their parents and our faculty and staff.  Prior to coming to Aristoi, I taught 11 years in a rural high school in Tennessee and six years in university art galleries in Pennsylvania.  I have all-level art certification, a BFA from Stephen F. Austin State University, and an MFA from Tyler School of Art, Temple University.

My goals are to foster a respectful and loving relationship with the students and our school family, to express my love for art and to teach its integral place in civilization.  Your children’s artwork will be prominently displayed at school and returned to you as it is completed through their classroom teacher.  Some of the upper grades will have projects that we work on over several days/weeks.

My art classes will follow the school’s grading, discipline and reporting policies.  Your child’s art grade will be based on his or her daily participation, use of the materials and techniques, knowledge of the concepts, positive contribution to the classroom’s “climate” and their final projects and assignments.  You are welcome to check on your child’s success by contacting me at 281-391-5003;  we will set up an appointment to discuss any triumphs or concerns you may have.  I am also available by email at aalexander@aristoiclassical.org.

I will send home a copy of the syllabus (listing of topics we will be covering by which approximate dates) during the first week of school.  Your child will not have an individual textbook checked out to them, but we will work with many different visual resources throughout the year.

Our classwork will consist of practicing techniques, making artwork and learning about the building blocks or ‘elements’ of art - line, shape, form, color, space, texture and value.  In accordance with our classical education tenets, we will spend considerable time reading about artists and understanding the time periods in which the masterpieces of art history were created.

As of this time, the school will provide most of the supplies for our class.  Any exceptions to this, such as a t-shirt for tie-dying, will be discussed with you in advance.

As we work together, our art program can be one of joy and wonder.  I look forward to seeing that joy in your child’s eyes.
